The Passing of Time (Self-Assessment)
I was fairly confident that I would be able to create this blog without difficulty. I'd come across other people's blogs before in explorations across the net, and although I hadn't seen many informative, what I felt to be truly purposeful uses for them, apart from perhaps to the authors, the link is pretty easy to make with regards to seeing other applications for it. It was a pretty fun experience putting something "of my own" on the internet.
One thing in particular that I learnt, or rather, was reminded about, was that technology, although it can be so instructive and an effective means of communication, it cannot always be relied upon to be consistently reliable. This re-realisation came about as I moved between typing into the direct posting page and into the word-processing program- changes in format happened sometimes, sometimes not.....it was inconsistent...and that was frustrating! But to be honest, I found it really refreshing to be able to use something that I frequently access, i.e. the internet, for learning, and I can imagine the applicability of it to students in their learning too.
The connection to theory was fairly transparent- if we're going to be opening meanings to the kids, we will need to be versed in it and able to negotiate our way through it. I previously hadn't thought explicitly about being multiliterate- having had an interest in the power and psychology behind marketing, but that's going back to the high-school years, I was aware of intentional "manipulation" of various elements to "brainwash" the masses (for want of putting it all in a positive light!) especially in advertising, however this subject has labelled and made, extended etc prior knowledge and given me the metalanguage ~wink wink~ to be able to express these understandings in precise technical terms! That make this person here pretty confident in thinking about facilitating the kids' learning with their metaliteracy.
